Aqua Expeditions could not be more fortunate than to have David Thompson, Asia’s top ranked chef on The Diners Club® World’s 50 Best Restaurants’ List, join them as Executive Chef of the Aqua Mekong.

The onboard chefs shop local riverside markets for the day’s freshest ingredients, from catfish to river prawns and organic, local produce. Coconut, lemongrass, coriander, and turmeric are just a few of the recognizable flavors guests can expect on Thompson’s ever changing, inventive menus that always remain authentic to the fertile surroundings.

Dining Room

Designed to match, and occasionally distract from the stunning surroundings, Executive Chef David Thompson’s dishes incorporate the timeless flavors and ancient sustainable ingredients of the Mekong’s many cultures and fertile fields. Thompson built his reputation on Southeast Asian recipes culled from historic sources, a delectable tradition he continues on board the Aqua Mekong, bringing together the finest recipes of Khmer and Vietnamese river cultures.

Subtly balancing this timeless scenery, the dining room's refined interior has been stylishly finished with contemporary Asian artifacts, fine china, and crystal glassware. These design elements are matched by attentive, personalized service from English-speaking staff that quickly learns guest names and tastes, from Vietnamese sweet coffee in the morning to the evening’s fine imported wines.

Indoor Lounge

Settle into the sleek contemporary chairs, modeled after southeast Asian colonial planters, in the ship’s air-conditioned Indoor Lounge. Sink into a plump couch angled to optimize the views of the ever-changing Vietnamese or Cambodian landscapes streaming in through the floor-to-ceiling wall of windows. At the back of the lounge, order a fresh tropical fruit cocktail from the fully stocked bar, or choose an Angkor beer or fine European wine. Guests gravitate to the Indoor Lounge in the mornings for Vietnamese iced coffee with sweet condensed milk, to swap travelers tales, and for daily lectures from expert local guides about topics relevant to upcoming excursions.

Outdoor Lounge

Choose to relax at either of the Aqua Mekong’s Outdoor Lounges located on the Observation Deck level. Both the bow and the stern lounges are outfitted with comfortable sun loungers, shaded canopies, and a fully stocked rooftop bar. Sip Sundowners by the river-facing plunge pool, or let its cool waters take the edge off the equatorial swelter after an excursion into the emerald-flooded forest or among the colorful melee of floating markets.

Observation Deck

Sunlit indoors and out, the top level Observation Deck has been designed to seamlessly connect guests with the constantly shifting landscape of floating Vietnamese villages, French colonial church spires, and gilded Buddhist stupas along this mighty river, always in the utmost comfort. Whether one chooses to relax in the air-conditioned Indoor Lounge, or cool off with a plunge in the shimmering pool at the bow side, the Observation Deck ensures that the river always remains in full view.

Private Screening Room

Enhance any Mekong River journey with classic films about this exotic region, for which the cruise director will be happy to organize a private screening. Guests will also gather for private lectures, videos, and documentaries about the fascinating cultures along this Mekong River journey.

Four auxiliary aluminum launch boats, each with capacity for 10 passengers, depart from the Aqua Mekong two or three times per day on 3, 4, and 7-night cruises. Ten bicycles aboard the Aqua Mekong allow guests to go off on two wheels along the Mekong’s fascinating riverbanks. Experienced river guides lead guests into the sultry jungle on foot, or by bicycle, in search of enigmatic vestiges of Indochine made famous by French writer Marguerite Duras, who grew up along this timeless river. Encounter flocks of painted stork, spot billed pelicans, and the elusive Masked Finfoot in their last Southeast Asian refuge. Explore flooded emerald forests and bamboo stilt villages accessible only by boat, and remote Buddhist monasteries that are still home to noble saffron-robed monks who will grant guests private audiences amidst flickering candles and smiling stone Buddhas.

Guides and Crew

Four professionally trained guides lead guests of the Aqua Mekong on daily expeditions aboard comfortable skiffs deep into the Mekong River’s tributaries, and on foot among Khmer pottery villages, remote mountain monasteries, and among the cultural treasures of Phnom Penh. These English-speaking, professionally trained experts grew up along the Mekong River, and know its Buddhist temples, Hindu ruins, Catholic churches, and elusive wildlife, as well as many of the Vietnamese and Cambodian people they will introduce guests to en route.
