Santorini Island Tour - Half Day Tour

You will be met by your English-speaking guide upon disembarkation from the ship, at the bottom of the cable car at the Old Port of Fira. Our lovely tour starts with a scenic drive through the plains of Santorini to picturesque Oia, the crowning glory of peace and tranquillity.

Built on the northern part of the caldera rim, it is here where many artists have been inspired due to its magnificent location with its most superb views of the caldera, the rest of the island and the Aegean Sea.. We then stop at one of the famous wineries to enjoy a wine tasting tour of the fine wines produced on the island. Our final stop is Fira, the islands capital town.

The island used to be circular, but a massive volcanic explosion around 3,500 years ago blew out the centre of the island. (Many people attribute the decline of Minoan civilization on Crete to this cataclysmic eruption. High cliffs jutting into the sea are all that's left of the crater rim.

The surrounding islands are the remains of the sides of the crater, and the sea has filled in the gaps, forming a beautiful bay. Sunsets on the island are particularly striking; all the restaurants and bars in Fira face west over the sunken volcano and the Aegean Sea.

Santorini - Traditional Cooking Experience - 5.5 hours
Upon disembarkation from the ship at the Old Port of Fira, you will be met by your English-speaking escort who will escort you (on foot) to the Selene restaurant. Upon completion of the program you can return on your own to the cable cars leading to the ship.

We will welcome you at Selene Restaurant with fresh juice, coffee and traditional Greek cookies. A lecture by Yiorgos Hatziyannakis will give you an introduction to the cuisine of the Cycladic Islands and particularly of Santorini. Following the lecture, we will introduce to you the unique local products of our island. The volcanic eruption that broke the island of Santorini apart almost 3500 years ago left the dramatic caldera that you see today. With more than 300 days of sunshine and its rich volcanic soil, the island yields a bounty of unusual indigenous herbs and vegetables: white eggplant, capers and caper leaves, fava (small yellow peas), exquisite baby tomatoes - all grown virtually without water.

We will introduce you to the Santorini wine, to the grape varieties and to the Santorini vineyard, and you will have the chance to sample four different wines in the wine tasting we have arranged for you. Cheeses and sausages from several other Cycladic islands, including Naxos, Syros, Ios, Tinos, brought especially for this occasion, will accompany the wines.

At about 12pm the presentation and the demonstration of four different recipes will take place. You will learn how to prepare an entire Greek menu: an appetizer, a salad, a main course, and a dessert. Food items include:
  • Fava with tomato caper sauce or Tomato fritters (tomatokeftedes)
  • Eggplant salad with octopus or Taramosalata
  • Rabbit with egg- cheese sauce or Lamb in grapevine leaves
  • Cheese and honey sweet pastry or Melitinia (traditional Santorini cookie)
After we have prepared the dishes, at about 2pm. you will be able to enjoy the fruits of your labors accompanied by a bottle of delicious wine from Santorini.

Duration approx. 5 1/2 hours

Note: The program is available for couples and small parties of up to 8 persons

The program starts at approx. 10am. Lunch is served at 2pm.

Sorrento - Herculaneum / Naples - 8 hours

A wonderful introduction to the fascinating city of Naples and the world famous archaeological site of Herculaneum. Meet your guide as well as driver portside to set off on your adventure.

This full day tour will take you to two very different places. We have the life, the fun, the fabulous shopping and the almost "chaos" of Naples that of course is a must on any itinerary, but prior to getting there you will take a step back in time to remember the Roman Empire for your visit to Herculaneum.

Just a short drive from Naples Center, Herculaneum, like Pompeii was badly damaged in the Earthquake of 62. It then had to deal with the eruption in 79, falling victim to the rain of ash and lipilli.

The present state of the excavations are very different to those in Pompeii. Herculaneum is much smaller and is thought to adhere more closely to the traditions inherited from the Samonite period in its customs and building practices.

As you explore these ruins and the ancient city becomes alive, you learn to understand that the main industries here were once agriculture and fishing. Learn how the lower classes once mingled freely with the representatives of families of ancient lineage. You will learn about the leisure time and entertainment that once existed here and much, much more. This is an excellent tour to introduce you to just what this area has to offer.

Highlights:

  • Meet your guide as well as driver portside to begin your excursion.
  • On this tour you will get to enjoy both the fun city of Naples, as well as taking a step back in time to remember the Roman Empire during your visit to Herculaneum.

Sorrento - Isle of Capri - 8 hours

Climb aboard the hydrofoil at Sorrento Port for a day of fun 'alla Caprese' and discover what keeps the jet set coming back to the enchanted Isle of Capri, from 1st C Emperor Caesar Augustus to 20th C fashion icon Jackie O...
Your trip begins at the Port of Sorrento - the jumping off point for the hydrofoil to Capri. During the short crossing, your guide will regale you with stories of the people, places and history that have made this four-mile block of limestone so legendary. Once on the island, visit Marina Grande, the main port and a seaside gem with a jumble of multicolored traditional houses, terraced slopes bursting with Mediterranean blooms and jaw-dropping mountains rising up behind. The tour continues by funicular railway to Capri Town. Perched on the saddleback between the island's main mountains, this is where the see-and-be-seen set sips Bellinis on La Piazzetta and high fashion boutiques and artisan workshops line the narrow, elegant streets. And finally, we take a taxi over the gentle slopes of Monte Solaro to Ana Capri, the island's "second city" perched on a verdant plateau. Despite its popularity, Ana Capri still retains its original charms, with cobblers and embroiderers peddling their wares and bougainvillea draping the characteristic whitewashed houses that show a Moorish influence. One highlight of this end of the island is Villa San Michele. Built at the turn of the 20th century by Swedish physician, nature lover and Renaissance man Axel Munthe, we'll visit its lush gardens, charming museum and quaint chapel. More adventurous types might enjoy a chairlift ride up to the summit of Monte Solaro for 360-degree views of this inimitable landscape, before returning to Marina Grande by taxi.

Sorrento - VIP's in Capri - 8 hours

What's the best way to experience the Isle of Capri? From the water, of course! Join your captain to cruise on a private motorboat across the Bay of Naples to what just might be the world's favorite island...
Meet your English-speaking captain at Sorrento Port and board your private motorboat for the crossing to Capri. Leaving the cityscape of Naples and the citrus groves of the Sorrento Peninsula behind, the Gulf of Naples opens up before you and Capri beckons with its myriad charms. Circling this 4-mile-long block of limestone is a quick trip, leaving plenty of time to get up close and personal with some of Capri's most legendary sights, like the Bagni di Tiberio where the 1st century Roman Emperor used to swim; Lo Scoglio delle Sirene, the siren's rocks where legend has it Odysseus faced his greatest temptation and the storied Faraglioni, three staggering rock formations jutting out of the Tyrrhenian sea. Your captain is more than happy to customize the cruise to suit your needs - stop at a seaside restaurant for some fresh-off-the-hook seafood, take a dip in a secluded cove accessible only by boat (don't forget the swimsuits!) or make landfall to see and be seen with Capri's legendary jet set. Presently, the city is divided into Sa Penya, known as "ciudad baja" (lower city) and Dalt Vila, a monumental area located on the higher part of the city, declared World Heritage Site. Dalt Vila is surrounded by well preserved Renaissance walls, built by King Carlos V, which served as a model for walls and fortresses in the New World. The considerable height of its bastions provides a gorgeous view to the city and the port under it.

The Portal de ses Taules is the gate to the walled enclosure, with remarkable buildings inside, like the City Hall, located in the old convent of Predicadores, the church of Santo Domingo and the chapel of Sant Salvador. The cathedral, erected on top of an ancient mosque, has a sober Gothic structure, built in the 14th century and later remodelled in the 18th century. One of the most valuable pieces of precious metalwork that are kept inside is a gold-plated silver monstrance. Sharing the same square as the cathedral, the Episcopal Palace stands out, with its distinguished gateway. Another remarkable building is the Castell o Almudaina, the tallest building in the capital, with its great Arab dungeon.

Few cities are, like Valencia, able to combine so harmoniously remains from remote periods, as far away as 138 B.C., with the most modern, avant-garde buildings to be erected in the new millennium.

The historical building that houses the Fine Arts museum was originally the San Pío Seminary College, founded in 1683 by Brother Juan Tomás de Rocabertí, the Archbishop of Valencia. The architect Juan Bautista Pérez Castiel, master of works on the Cathedral, was responsible for its design. Exhibited are the works of painters from the Valencian School such as Joanes, los Ribalta, Espinosa, Vicente López, Soralla, Pinazo and others. Other exhibits include works by Pintoricchio, Andrea del Sarto, Van Dyck, Murillo, Velázquez, El Greco and Goya.

The Colón Market is one of the most emblematic modernist buildings in the city. It was built in 1914 by Francisco de Mora y Berenguer. It is an open, circular area occupying the whole block and brings to mind the old awnings of the traditional market places. An important restoration project, working on the structure, brickwork, ceramic work and wood has returned the market to its former glory; the trencadís that decorates the original entrance is of special interest.

The Almudín was built on the site of a Muslim castle at the beginning of the 14th century as a warehouse for the storage and sale of wheat; the building was extended during the 15th and 16th centuries. It is a basic design with a central, open patio which was partially covered in the 17th century. The entrance area is decorated with murals depicting scenes related to the commercial activities that took place as well as paintings of the patron saints of the artisans that worked there.

Demetrio Ribes designed this modernist Railway Station construction in 1917 in line with the ‘Secesión Vienesa’ tendency. The style is homogeneous and unique. The interior and exterior decoration is a tribute to the importance of the Valencian orange trade. The façade exhibits a gothic influence in terms of its symmetry and modulation while the quality of the mosaic work on the ceilings, walls and floors, as well as the intricate wrought-iron grilles and the myriad of colourful ceramics are superb.

The City of Arts and Sciences is a cultural entertainment centre with stunning architecture and great capacity to entertain, teach and excite by promoting public participation. Situated along almost two kilometres of what was formerly the bed of the River Turia, with a surface area of 350,000 square metres, the City of Arts and Sciences is a huge open space.
Offering cultural and intellectual leisure, it has given Valencia the best centre of this type in Europe. The outstanding role of its architecture was made possible thanks to the work of two Spanish architects of international renown, who have contributed the very best of their work to this area: the Valencian Santiago Calatrava, who designed the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, the Hemisfèric, the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum, the Umbracle, and the Ágora (under construction), and Félix Candela, designer of the unique roofing of the main Oceanográfico buildings.

The Royal Marina is a fine example of the city's transcendence as a seaside destination and its portrayal of the quintessential Mediterranean lifestyle, the Marina characterises Valencia's ambition to establish itself as an events capital and a city for sports, through this promotion of sailing and motor racing.

Few cities are, like Valencia, able to combine so harmoniously remains from remote periods, as far away as 138 B.C., with the most modern, avant-garde buildings to be erected in the new millennium.

The Cathedral of Valencia stands in the same place where the first temple of the Roman city was erected, and later, an Arab mosque. Built between 1262 and 1426, the many expansions and alterations it has gone through have left their mark in the interesting juxtaposition of styles laid over the prevailing primitive Gothic.

The González Martí ceramic museum is housed in a building that dates from the last decade of the 15th century and was refurbished in 1740 by order of the Marqués de Dos Aguas. It was at this time that the magnificent alabaster entrance was constructed; the Virgin overlooks the door below which is flanked by two streams of water and vegetation that symbolise the two rivers (Dos Aguas) and their life-giving properties. The entrance is the work of José Vergara, Hipólito Rovira, Ignacio Vergara and Luis Domingo; it made the building famous for its unusual beauty.

Yet beyond all doubt, the most remarkable building is the Lonja de la Seda (the Silk Exchange), an elegant Gothic structure built towards the end of the 15th century that has been declared World Heritage Site. This ancient trading place holds authentic treasures in its interior, such as the monumental Salón de las Columnas, the Torreón Central and the Sala de Juntas del Consulado del Mar.

The Central Market in Valencia covers more than 8,000 square metres, over two floors, with a predominantly eclectic pre-Modernist style. Its unusual roof comprises original domes and sloping sections at different heights, while the interior seems to be lined in a range of materials such as iron, wood, ceramics and polychromed tiles. The beauty of the building stands out especially on account of the light that enters through the roof at various points, and through coloured window panels.

Few cities are, like Valencia, able to combine so harmoniously remains from remote periods, as far away as 138 B.C., with the most modern, avant-garde buildings to be erected in the new millennium.

The Museo Fallero is based in an old lepers’ hospital next to the Creueta de la Mare de Déu de Monteolivet. It was converted into a barracks in 1834 and was later used as a prison. The collection consists of Ninots (papier-mâché figures made for the Fallas), which have been saved from the flames by popular vote every year since 1934. It also contains posters and photographs of the Fallas.

The Patriarca, Real Colegio and the Seminario del Corpus Christi are a church, a seminary and a college respectively. Work on the buildings began in 1586 and finished in 1610. It is structured around a large renaissance cloister enclosing the church, the communion chapel, the library, the sleeping quarters and the classrooms. There is another courtyard at the back and a small belfry is located in the corner of the plaza.

Under the supervision of Pere Balaguer, construction began in 1392. The Serrano towers were designed to be defensive structures at one of the busiest city gates. They were saved from demolition when the city walls were knocked down in 1865 and used as a prison for the nobility between 1586 and 1887. The Towers represent an excellent example of gothic architecture.
This magnificent museum is located in the Royal Seminary College of Corpus Christi. It was founded in 1583 by Saint Juan de Ribera, who put together an excellent collection of paintings.

The Bullring is located in the city center, next to the Northern Station. It is a neoclassic building design by Sebastián Monleón, built between 1850-1860, of 18 metres high and the ring has a diameter of 52 meters.

The Rambla is possibly the most well known avenue and represents a typical postcard of the city. A place for public and sport celebrations, the Rambla is a boulevard that starts in Plaça Catalunya (Barcelona’s commercial area) and ends in the Port, offering a multicoloured picture of people enjoying a walk, live statues, artists, musicians, painters and atmosphere. One of the symbols of the Rambla is the Fountain of Canaletes. Tradition says that visitors who drink from this source will return to Barcelona.

One of the main arteries of the historic quarter, La Rambla, leads to the Mediterranean Sea, and it is one of the best places to catch the rhythm of the city. The visitor is led through its different sections, from the Romanesque church of Santa Anna, to the different stalls, passing gorgeous examples of Baroque and Renaissance architecture on the way and the Boquería Market.
It is worth to stop for a moment and visit the Church of Betlem and the Palau de la Virreina, with permanent exhibitions of interest. A visit to the Market of la Boqueria is advisable to enjoy an incredible contrast between colours and activity, ideal to discover why Mediterranean cuisine is internationally known due to its ingredients.
Walking down the avenue, in direction to the sea, we find the Plà de la Boqueria. Its pavement is decorated with a mosaic of Joan Miró. Very near is the Gran Teatre del Liceu (the Opera House), recently reconstructed after a devastating fire in 1994. Crossing the Rambla we find the Plaça Reial, an interesting porticoed square, ideal to relax and enjoy a meal in one of the many restaurants.
In Nou de la Rambla Street is located the Palau Güell, a beautiful palace of recommended visit where you will be able to appreciate all the creative capacity of Antoni Gaudí. Afterwards the great gothic Shipyards. The Rambla ends in the port, dominated by the Columbus Monument, built in 1888.
One of Barcelona’s finest landmark buildings is the Reials Drassanes, the medieval shipyards which are a unique example of civic Gothic architecture with a full-scale replica of the royal galley used by Juan of Austria at the Battle of Lepanto,
Some of the modern facilities are the inheritance from the 1992 Olympics. Their mark can also be seen on the hill at Montjuïc, beside the monumental work from the 1929 World Exhibition. The Plaça d'Espanya, the Magic Fountain, the Palau Nacional and the Olympic Ring are a few of its most important works. The Olympic Stadium, the Calatrava Tower and the Sant Jordi Sports Centre.

La Ribera quarter was in Roman times a place for country homes. In the 6th century, the area was dominated by a Christian necropolis. The first monastery was raised here in the 11th century. In the 13th century it was a busy tradesmen’s district and Passeig del Born was Barcelona’ s main square from the 13th to the 18th centuries. Jousting tournaments, executions and other public entertainments took place in the Middle Ages.
The Santa María del Mar church is one of the best examples of 14th century Catalonian Gothic architecture. It is the work of the architect Berenguer de Montagut and was the templeof the shipowners and merchants in Gothic Barcelona. Seen from the outside, its appearance is solid and robust, dominated by straight lines. The inside consists of three naves, an ambulatory and is without a transept. The amazing height of the central nave with its majestic octagonal columns stands out.
The Palau de la Música Catalana was built between 1905 and 1908 by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and it is an architectural jewel of Catalan Art Nouveau, the only concert venue in this style to be listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (4th December 1997), which today represents an essential landmark in the cultural and social life of Catalonia.

The Santa Caterina market building was constructed on the former site of the Convent of Santa Caterina, from which it takes its name. The refurbishment of Barcelona’s first covered food market by the architectural practice of Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue was completed in 2005. The food market revealed a gleaming, undulating and brightly coloured roof designed to be seen from the air. The roof is attached to the building by a wooden structure, and a vast mosaic of coloured ceramic pieces, representing fruit and vegetables, boldly breaks with the traditional look of a market.

The Picasso Museum in Barcelona is a clear example of the ties Pablo Picasso had with the city of Barcelona. Here, he not only received sound academic training but also the artistic effervescence that lit the fire and opened the doors towards modernism.
Inaugurated in 1963, the Picasso Museum not only owns the most important and exhaustive collection of the works of art from Pablo Picasso's youth and period of training but also holds temporary exhibitions of other artists related to this artistic figurehead.

Its early city centre, which was surrounded by walls during Roman times, makes up what today is the Gothic and Jewish Quarter. Narrow streets, with quiet squares and attractive corners, are home to an abundant collection of Gothic buildings, both civil and religious. Surrounding Barcelona's impressive gothic Cathedral, medieval palaces emerge, such as Casa dels Canonges and Casa d´Ardiaca. The Plaça del Rei brings together another labyrinth of marvellous buildings, such as the Palau Reial Mayor and the Chapel of Santa Ágata. The Plaça Sant Jaume holds the Palau de la Generalitat (headquarters of the Catalan government) and the City Hall.
The oldest synagogue in Europe dating back to 1306 is in Barcelona. The site of the older Call of Barcelona –the Call Major– is located between l’Arc de Santamon, Call, Bisbe and Sant Sever Streets. In the mid-13th century, the geographic space designated to the Jewish community was amplified. On the outskirts of what is today the Church of Sant Jaume, the Call Menor (Minor) sprouted and thrived.

Narrow streets, with quiet squares and attractive corners, are home to an abundant collection of Gothic buildings, both civil and religious. Surrounding Barcelona's impressive gothic Cathedral, situated on the site of a Paleochristian basilica. Construction began during the Romanesque period but was finally completed during the Gothic period, which is the dominant style. The interior naves are at nearly the same height, which causes the impression of being in a single site. The dome base is covered on the inside with handcrafted woodwork. The door from the cloister to the cathedral and the chapel of Santa Lucía are of great interest.

The urban development of the central area of Barcelona was defined, towards the end of the 19th century, by the Eixample (urban expansion). An extensive grid, with large avenues and chamfered corners, joined the irregular layouts of old districts and outlying towns to the surrounding hills. The emerging Catalonian bourgeoisie chose this place to build its mansions and palaces, following the most daring principles of Modernism. Works by Gaudí, such Casa Milà “La Pedrera”, Casa Batlló and the temple of the Sagrada Familia (the Holy Family) are just a few of the many modernist gems treasured by the city. The Sagrada Familia great expiatory temple: in 1883 the brilliant Gaudí agreed to direct this work, succeeding Francisco de Paula. The artist worked on it until his death. Work to complete this great church still continues today.
One of the main arteries of the historic quarter, La Rambla, leads to the Mediterranean Sea, and it is one of the best places to catch the rhythm of the city.

Park Güell seems as if it were taken from the pages of a fairytale: strange, eccentric, even dream-like, but undeniably beautiful. A stroll through the park will awaken even the sleepiest imaginations. The peculiar shapes and daring color combinations mixed in with the park’s vegetation create a unique world to which visitors feel irresistibly drawn.

Flamenco is a genuine Spanish art, and to be more exact an genuine Southern Spanish art. It exists in three forms: Cante, the song, Baile, the dance, and Guitarra, guitar playing.

Gypsies are very often named as its fathers, and at least it can be taken for certain that they played an important part in its creation. But also the popular songs and dances of Andalucia have influenced early Flamenco considerably.

Certainly there were other influences, too, as it will not surprise in a country that has been dominated by most diverse cultures and civilizations during its different historical epochs. There were the legendary Tartessos, and seven centuries of Muslim occupation hardly could have passed without leaving traces. All that, directly or indirectly, influenced Flamenco.

The moreneta of Montserrat. The adoration of this Virgin extended all over South America when the monk Bernat Boil accompanied Christopher Columbus to the New World.

It is said that an image of the Virgen de Montserrat appeared in a cave in the mountain. Situated 45 kilometres Northwest of Barcelona, the monastery was founded by Abbot Oliba in 1025, although there is evidence that in the year 888, there was a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God. In the 12th century the Romanesque church was built and in 1223, the first European School for child singers. Leon XIII declared the Virgin of Montserrat patron saint of Catalunya. In the year 1500, San Ignacio de Loyola arrived as a pilgrim. The library has over 300,000 books. We have a choir school. There is a museum with paintings by artists such as El Greco, Picasso and Dalí. There are even treasures from ancient Egypt, amongst which one of the most outstanding treasures is a mummy. Montserrat lost most of its heritage during the Napoleonic Wars. However, since the Monastery was restored in 1844, the Museum has formed a valuable collection of artistic works. Private donations, from the artists themselves, and the sensitivity of the monks have made this possible. The Museum is divided into different sections organised in an instructive way. There are 13th century documents that prove that a choir school already existed in Montserrat. It was a religious and musical institution, made up by choir boys.

Located between the sea and the mountains and at 35 minutes from Barcelona, it is a lovely fishermen and Mediterranean village with a nice beach promenade and city center.

Casa de la Vila, a nineteenth-century Gothic revival building and Palau Maricel, with Renaissance, Baroque and medieval elements, are other interesting places to visit in the city. The Modernist aesthetics from the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century left in Sitges beautiful buildings like Cau Ferrat, the house-studio of writer and painter Santiago Rusiñol. This artist moved to Sitges in 1891 and turned it into a meeting point for artists and intellectuals, giving it the bohemian air that it still preserves. The house-studio of Rusiñol exhibits his works next to paintings by El Greco, Zuloaga and Picasso, among others. At the Maricel Museum they have Romanesque, Gothic and Modern art collections.

We will also visit a Cava or Wine Cellar in the Penedés wine/cava area located at 45 minutes from Barcelona. Cava is the local sparking wine (Catalonian champagne). Cava is a sparkling white wine made using the "Method Champenoise". For a wine to be classified as cava it must be in contact with the lees for a minimum period of 9 months before disgorgement. The grape varieties permitted in the production of cava are as follows Parellada, Macabeo (Viura), Xarel-lo, Chardonnay and smaller amounts of Monastrell and Pinot Noir.

The so-called "City of the Four Rivers", shows us a historic centre dominated by medieval buildings and reminders of Romans, Arabs and Jews. Inside the walled enclosure of "La Força Vella" you can find the culiminating works of its historical destiny. One of the rivers, the Onyar, divides the historic centre from the modern city.

The old centre of this Catalan city preserves remains of its long history, from the time it was founded by the Romans in the 1st century B. C. To them we owe its original wall, whose remains stretch from the Archaeological Walk to the Wall Gardens.

Set in this walled enclosure (La Força Vella), stands the Cathedral. Its Romanesque origin is shown in its fortress-like appearance and strategic location, although the most outstanding aspect is an immense Gothic nave, the widest in Medieval European architecture. Inside, it preserves one of the textile jewels of Catalan Romanesque, the Creation Tapestry.

Girona has other key pieces of religious architecture, like the Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants. The convent of Sant Doménech, built in Gothic style and a clear example of the importance of the religious orders in the colonisation and repopulation of Catalonia during the Middle Ages, stands amid gardens.

Also to this historical period belong important displays of Arab and Jewish art, the result of these cultures living side-by-side with Christianity for centuries. So, you will discover the multitude of small streets making up El Call, the Jewish quarter of Girona. Calle Força is the heart of this district, which had a synagogue and centres of cabbalistic study. The Call is currently one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in Spain.

In the 12th century, Jews moved to a lower part of the city. In 1160 they were already inhabiting the Call, the name given to Jewish quarters in Catalonia. It is a name coming from Latin callis (street), which would become carrer in Catalan and calle in Spanish. In medieval times, call meant a "group of narrow streets". These paved, narrow and labirynth streets constituted the urban space where most of the Jewish population in Girona settled in the 13th and 14th centuries. The community's main body was formed by tradesmen and craftsmen: tailors, shoemakers, weavers, barbers, furriers, blacksmiths, goldsmiths and silversmiths opened their workshops in the Call´s narrow streets. Others devoted their time to medicine and astrology, while those who had the means became money-lenders. In Girona there is The Bonastruc ça Porta Centre, located in the emblematic building that housed the last synagogue of Girona, is currently the home of the Museum of the History of the Jews and the Nahmanides Institute for Jewish studies.

Not far from here, a Capuchin convent houses the Arab Baths, where we should point out a pavilion built on eight fine columns and crowned by an octagonal cupola.

Figueres, county capital of Alt Empordà, extends over a river plain situated inland in the province of Girona. Known as the home of Salvador Dalí, this town with deep Catalan roots offers visitors the chance to go to the Dalí Theatre-Museum, dedicated to the genius of surrealist painting.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum is without doubt, however, one of the historical milestones that has left the greatest mark on the character of the town was the birth of Salvador Dalí. Situated in the old municipal theatre, has become one of the main cultural places to see in the city. Designed by the artist himself, it holds an important exhibition, which, through numerous works, allows you to take a trip through the career of the main considered a master of Surrealism. The site was extended with the Torre Galatea, where the artistic genius died.

Its early city centre, which was surrounded by walls during Roman times, makes up what today is the Gothic Quarter.

The Santa María del Mar church is one of the best examples of 14th century Catalonian Gothic architecture. It is the work of the architect Berenguer de Montagut and was the temple of the shipowners and merchants in Gothic Barcelona. Seen from the outside, its appearance is solid and robust, dominated by straight lines. The inside consists of three naves, an ambulatory and is without a transept. The amazing height of the central nave with its majestic octagonal columns stands out.

One of the main arteries of the historic quarter, La Rambla, leads to the Mediterranean Sea, and it is one of the best places to catch the rhythm of the city. The visitor is led through its different sections, from the Romanesque church of Santa Anna, to the bird and flower stalls, passing gorgeous examples of Baroque and Renaissance architecture on the way and the Boquería Market. And the terraces, pubs and bars should not be forgotten because they are where one of the most deeply-rooted of all traditions of Spain is carried out: the “tapeo” (Tapas are essentially snacks. Bigger portions that are ordered to make up part of a meal are called raciones).

The Sagrada Familia great expiatory temple: in 1883 the brilliant Gaudí agreed to direct this work, succeeding Francisco de Paula. The artist worked on it until his death. Work to complete this great church still continues today. The first architect to work on this project planned a Neogothic building. However, following his death, Gaudí took over, respecting the original layout of the work, but soon leaving the mark of his personality and way of doing things. He finished only the chapel of San José, the crypt and the door of El Nacimiento. The façades and the entire exterior show extensive decorative elements in bright colours. La Pasión entrance has a cryptogram there.

The Modernist Sant Pau Complex was built between 1905 and 1930 and designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner as a garden city for nursing the sick. After being used as a public hospital for a century, its newly refurbished pavilions shine again in all their splendour. A visit to this exceptional architectural ensemble is a unique experience. This is Europe’s foremost art-nouveau complex and an icon among Barcelona’s dazzling array of landmarks which embodies the city’s innovative spirit. It was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1997 and now its architectural and artistic values have been brought to a wider audience with the new use of its pavilions.

Works by Gaudí, such Casa Milà “La Pedrera”, Casa Batlló and the temple of the Sagrada Familia (the Holy Family); Casa Amatller of Josep Puig i Cadalfach and Casa Lleó-Morera of Lluís Domènech I Montaner are just a few of the many modernist gems treasured by the city.

Casa Milà, better known as La Pedrera (Catalan for “The Quarry”), is a building designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. It is located in the Eixample district of Barcelona. It was built for Roger Segimon de Milà. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Works of Antoni Gaudí”. The building does not have any straight lines. Most people consider it magnificent and overwhelming; some say it is like waves of lava or a sand-dune. This building seems to break our understanding of conventional architecture. The most astonishing part is the roof with an almost lunar appearance and dreamlike landscape.
Casa Batlló building looks very remarkable, like everything Gaudi designed, only identifiable as Modernisme or Art Nouveau in the broadest sense. The ground floor, in particular, is rather astonishing with tracery, irregular oval windows and flowing sculpted stone work. It seems that the goal of the designer was to avoid straight lines completely. Much of the façade is decorated with a mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles (trencadís) that starts in shades of golden orange moving into greenish blues. The roof is arched and was likened to the back of a dragon or dinosaur.
The Museu de Modernisme Català is housed in a centrally located modernista building designed by the architect Enric Sagnier.n The top floor of the MMCat showcases the furniture and decorative arts and has a room dedicated to Antoni Gaudi. The ground floor displays paintings, sculptures and stained glass.
