Lima - City of the Kings (4 hours)

WHAT YOU'LL VISIT
Depart the pier to Lima's main square where the Spanish conqueror, Francisco Pizarro, founded the "City of Kings" in 1535. The Government Palace, Lima City Hall, Archbishop's Palace, and the Lima Cathedral surround the square.
Visit Santo Domingo Convent, the oldest church and convent in Lima. The foundation of the city of Santo Domingo was conceived by a friar named Tomas de San Martin, who later served as the Preceptor Prior of the Dominican Order. As in all convents located between the jirones of Lima and Camana, Santo Domingo is sort of a city within a city, and is comprised of a succession of cloisters and yards surrounded by service areas and communal rooms. Both Saint Rose and Saint Martin de Porres are buried in Lima, as is the Spanish Saint San Juan Masias. Construction of the Santo Domingo Convent began in 1540, but it was later modernized into its present neo-classical style in the 18th century. In 1730, the greater, or general, hall was built - a work of art that later became a part of the city's more unified ornamental groups.
The visit Casa Aliaga, the oldest house in the Americas, which has been continuously occupied by 18 generations of the Aliaga family; tour the impressive colonial residence, containing valuable Peruvian art and artifacts.

After you leave colonial Lima, you will drive through the residential districts of San Isidro and Miraflores. Both are suburbs where the rich and intelligentsia live. There are many large mansions, colonial buildings and fine hotels. Finally, you'll stop at El Parque del Amor for a great ocean view before finishing your tour. After this stop reboard the motor-coach to return to the pier.

WHAT YOU'LL SEE ALONG THE WAY
To truly feel the spirit of the city, your tour begins with the Colonial sites of Lima, passing by the Plaza San Martin, the Plaza Mayor with its Cathedral and the Government Palace. The art works from Ancient Peru corresponds to the geographic area of the south Andes and belong to the Mr. José Ignacio Lambarri collection. Tiahuanaco and Inca cultures were developed on this territory. The works from the vice regal period consist of paintings, sculptures, furniture and silver works that belonged to the Pedro de Osma Gildemeister collection (1901-1967). Pachacamac and the Paso Horses (8 hours)

WHAT YOU'LL VISIT
An awesome journey into the past, today's tour starts with a visit to archaeological ruins of Pachacamac. This fascinating site takes its name from the Quechua words 'pacha' and 'camac' meaning 'Lord of the World'. It was predominantly a religious place throughout Peru's history, and contains a number of adobe structures that remain today. The most significant of these are the Old Temple, the Temple of the Sun, and the Temple of the Moon. From Ancient Peru we then enjoy an experience from the Peru of today, by lunching at one of the nearby haciendas. For lunch the owners of the hacienda join us. They will present an exhibition of their Paso, or Stepping horses, unique to Peru, before returning to Lima.

LUNCH
Pachamanca lunch is served at the hacienda. Pachamanca is a sort of meats along with potatoes, set potatoes, corn and fava beans cooked under the ground. The pachamanca is the epitome of the Andean banquet par excellence. Andean cultures tend to mix their worship of nature with social events. Salads are offered as appetizers and typical desserts.

Puerto Montt: The Llanquihue Lake Experience - 6 hours
HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS EXCURSION
  • The town of Puerto Varas
  • The Settlers Museum in Frutillar
  • Angelmó Handicrafts Market in Puerto Montt

DESCRIPTION
This excursion takes in the main attractions of Puerto Montt and the nearby towns of Puerto Varas and Frutillar, both located on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, with spectacular views of the snow-capped Osorno Volcano.

Puerto Montt was founded in 1853 by German immigrants and their stalwart promoter Vicente Pérez Rosales, who named the town after another promoter of immigration, President Manuel Montt. The waterfront here was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1960, which had destroyed the city's port, church, and neighbourhood of Angelmó. Today it is the capital of Chile's Southern Lake District, a thriving city that invests heavily in salmon farming, shipping, and tourism. Puerto Montt is commercially and strategically very important to this region. Settled by German colonists in the mid-19th century, it features middle-European architecture, with high-pitched, redwood-shingled roofs and ornate balconies.

On leaving the port there will be a short visit of the Angelmó Handicrafts market located just a few minutes walk from the dock gates, before continue through the centre of the city for a glimpse of highlights such as the redwood cathedral on the city's plaza, which is the city's oldest building, dating back to 1856. Continue to the town of Puerto Varas for an orientation tour and enjoy the opportunity to take a photograph across the waters of the Llanquihue to one of the regions icons; the mighty Osorno Volcano. Puerto Varas is one of Chile's most charming towns, not only because of its privileged lakeside location, but also because of its quaint, German-influenced architecture, and its friendly, laid-back atmosphere. The city was built by the sweat and tenacity of German immigrants, and later it became a port for goods being shipped from the Lago Llanquihue area to Puerto Montt (mostly timber). Today most of the area's middle- and upper-middle-class residents call Puerto Varas home and commute to Puerto Montt and other surrounding places for work.

Along the trip we will do a short stop to enjoy the delicious local beer, Drakkar and Colonos; we will also visit the brewery to learn how they produce it. Our host will be the owner who will explain us the process.

Continue to the historic town of Frutillar. Founded in 1856 by German settlers, this is one the most charming towns in Chile. A visit will be made to the Settlers Museum, which features a collection of 19th-century antiques, clothing, and artefacts gathered from various immigrant German families around the area. There will also be a visit to the Teatro del Lago Concert Hall, an open-air venue that is gaining prestige on both a national and international level, and which is home to Frutillar’s famous Music Festival. Once an event for local and regional artists, this annual festival now draws international performers.

Light lunch will be served at “Lavanda Casa de Té”, an old barn where Opa Pancho spended many hours dedicated to one of his hobbies, mechanic; today, it has been turned into an exclusive tearoom immersed in lavender plantation.  Among aromas, flavors and memories of an unforgettable time, we will taste the finest flavors of tea accompanied by the best local pastry

After light lunch return to Puerto Montt, stopping briefly at an observation point for a view across Tenglo Bay with the ship in port.

Operational notes :

Duration : 6.15 hours

Puerto Montt: A Journey into Chile's Oldest National Park - 4 hours
HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS EXCURSION
  • The Petrohué Rapids
  • The town of Puerto Varas
  • Puerto Montt and the Angelmó Market

DESCRIPTION
This excursion takes in the main attractions of Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas, and the Petrohué Rapids, one of southern Chile’s most beautiful attractions.

Departing from the pier, the drive heads directly to one of the most famous beauty spots in Chile’s Lake District; Petrohué Rapids. The scenic journey follows the road to the village of Alerce, with views of charming wooden houses and churches, pristine farmland, and lush green forest, before taking the road that skirts Lake Llanquihue.

The arrival to the village of Ensenada, at the foot of the Osorno Volcano, marks the entrance to the oldest National Park in Chile; the Vicente Perez Rosales National Park. Founded in 1926 it covers an area of 251,000 hectares (619,970 acres), incorporating the park's centrepieces Lake Todos los Santos, the Petrohué Rapids, and three commanding volcanoes; Osorno, Calbuco, and Puntiagudo.

The mighty Petrohué is one of Chile’s most beautiful and exciting glacial rivers, and your guests will marvel at the spectacular scenery of ancient forests, waterfalls and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and volcanoes. Upon arrival to the rapids, one can enjoy the spectacle of the inky-green waters as they crash through lava channels formed after the eruption of the Osorno in 1850.

Head back west in the direction of Puerto Varas, where a short stop will be made. This tidy little town, with its lovely architecture and bustling centre, is mainly residential and thrives on tourism thanks to its grand setting on Lake Llanquihue and proximity to the nearby National Parks. Here there will be an opportunity to take a photograph or two across the waters of Lake Llanquihue to the mighty Osorno Volcano. Punta Arenas: Exploring the End of the World - 3.5 hours

HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS EXCURSION

  • A visit to the Braun-Menendez Regional Museum.
  • Cocktail and canapés at the De La Cruz hill
  • The municipal cemetery and the tomb dedicated to the Ona Indians.

 DESCRIPTION

This city tour begins with a visit to the southern sector  of Punta Arenas where we’ll visit the eerie wreckage of the Lord  Longsdale ship and the local market.

Afterwards we’ll head back to Old Town Punta Arenas. Here its European architecture, public buildings, main square and gardens with their varied styles denote wealth and luxury that existed in the city during the "golden era" between 1880 and 1914, when Punta Arenas was one of the most active ports of the Southern Cone.

The visit will continue to the Braun-Menendez Regional Museum, the former residence of Maurice Braun and Josefina Menendez, a marriage that united the two largest fortunes in the region of Magallanes. With the falling price of wool and the nationalization of the farms during the 1970's, the family lost most of their wealth and their descendants have since moved from Patagonia to the rest of world.

Moving from downtown towards the North, we’ll arrive at the Mount La Cruz panoramic point. It offers a beautiful view of the city, with its colorful roofs spreading up to the strait and showing the landscape of Tierra del Fuego, Mount Sarmiento and the southern area of the Brunswick Peninsula. Before continuing will take a few minutes to make a toast enjoying this unique view and brilliant photo stop.

To end this excursion we’ll take you to the beautifully landscaped Municipal Cemetery. Here, one can admire the splendid mausoleums of pioneer families as well as a tomb dedicated to the Unknown Ona, the now extinct Fireland Indians. They say you can't really understand a culture until you see where they bury their dead, and in the case of the cemetery of Punta Arenas, this edict certainly rings true. The Municipal Cemetery was opened by the Governor Señoret in 1894 and features a giant stone portico donated by Sara Braun in 1919. Inside this necropolis lies a veritable miniature city, with avenues that connect the magnificent tombs of the region's founding families, settlers, and civic workers and a rather solemn tomb where lie the remains of the last Selk'nam Indians of Tierra del Fuego.

This journey begins as we take off from the city towards the north. Once leaving Punta Arenas enjoy the scenery of the pampas and Patagonian steppe; rheas may be seen alongside hundreds of sheep.
In 1852 Bernard E. Philippi brought some sheep from Chiloé (island across Puerto Montt) and in 1877 the governor Double Diego Almeyda traveled to the Falkland Islands and brought 300 sheep that were sold in Punta Arenas. The following year other traders brought more sheep, and thus began the business of farming and today represent one of the main economic activities in the region. The principal landowners were English and Scots, who knew the handling of sheep and the necessary infrastructure.

Rio Penitente farm was founded by Alexander Morrison, a Scottish pioneer in 1891. Today his descendants are in charge, and will be here to welcome visitors to their charming ranch to explore their facilities, discover the traditional work around the farm, and watch the sheep working dogs and a sheep shearing exhibition.

The comfortable old-world setting provides sharp contrast with the raw beauty of the beech forest and open pampas of the surrounding Patagonian Landscapes. The clear water of Rio Penitente, flowing through the farm, offers excellent trout fishing.

For lunch an exquisite Patagonian barbecue will be served at the main dinning room.

Ushuaia: National Park Tour - 4 hours
Meet your local guide at local pier and start with your visit.
Tierra del Fuego National Park is the southernmost protected natural area of Argentina and runs for almost 7 km along the Beagle Channel. A rugged territory and successions of steep mountains, with rivers running through deep valleys and many lakes, make up the varied landscape.

Created by the Argentine government in the year 1960 to protect the southernmost sub-Antarctic forests, Tierra del Fuego National Park is the country's only park with an ocean shoreline. It offers historical and wild attractions, and borders with Chile to the West and the Beagle Channel to the South.

It boasts a typical glacial landscape, with a mountainous area and deep valleys washed by rivers and lakes, and mountains ranging from the North West to the South East.
There are numerous pedestrian crosswalks in this National Park starting at different points along Route Nº 3 and reaching wonderful places:

Island Walk - The 800 m track crosses part of the Cormorant Archipelago up to Green Lagoon. It runs along the banks of the Lapataia and Ovando rivers.
Negra Lagoon Track - 400 meters away from the Park, its dark colored waters are due to the presence of big peat mosses.
Lapataia Vantage Point Walk - An alternative access option to Lapataia Bay, after a 500-meter walk, through the lenga forest, a scenic pathway affords a striking view of the bay, and winds down to its shore.
Peat Bog Walkway - 400 meters away from Lapataia Bay, along the way through lenga forests may be seen abandoned beaver dams.
After tour you will be transferred back to the pier.

Grand Dining Room

Grand Dining Room
Handsomely decorated in rich woods, designer tapestry fabrics, and oversized armchairs, the expansive dining area exudes classic splendor. The Grand Dining Room's formally attired and classically trained wait staff graciously serve course after course of European-inspired cuisine or delectable alternatives such as healthy Canyon Ranch® signature dishes. Menus change daily with a brilliant choice of at least ten appetizers, soups and salads, and twelve entrées at dinner.

Jacques

Jacques
Exquisitely decorated with heirloom antiques, pickled wood furnishings, and art from Chef Jacques Pépin’s personal collection, Jacques was modeled after a Parisian bistro. Comfortable and eclectic, the ambiance is pure French, as is the cosmopolitan yet wonderfully embraceable cuisine. Luscious aromas waft from the gleaming show rotisserie, where chicken, duck, pork, beef, and veal roasts slowly turn. Each dish is a classic, ingeniously reinterpreted by Master Chef Pépin. This is Coq au Vin beyond the imagination. Rotisserie-roasted chicken falls off the bone, bursting with flavor. His Steak Frites pairs the succulence of prime beef with the crisp sweetness of pommes de terre. Jacques is absolutely magnifique.

Red Ginger

Red Ginger
Red Ginger's chefs have created contemporary interpretations of Asian classics. The interior simply glows with ebony woods, a soothing waterfall wall, and striking modern Asian artworks. To complement the stunning decor, Red Ginger's chefs have created contemporary interpretations of Asian classics. Begin with a Salad of Spicy Roast Duck and Watermelon with Cashews, Mint, and Thai Basil. Savor a Malaysian Beef Penaeng with Coconut Rice and Paratha Roti. Or try Thai Vegetable Curry with Sweet Potatoes, Aubergine, Mushrooms, and Basil in Green Curry Sauce. In Red Ginger, the gustatory pleasures are as striking as the visual ones.

Polo Grill

Polo Grill
Polo Grill embodies all the elements of a classic steakhouse, expressing them with timeless reverence. Mindful of tradition, the decor features crisp, white linen tablecloths, dark wood furnishings, and supple leather chairs. Each course stands as the very definition of time-honored favorites, most notably the beef dishes, all of which are USDA Prime and dry-aged for 28 days to enhance tenderness and flavor. Succulent seafood dishes, such as Grilled Swordfish and Whole Maine Lobster Gratinée, are also classics in their own right. The Classic Caesar Salad is also prepared according to tradition, tableside and with gusto.

Toscana

Toscana
In Italian, Toscana means Tuscan, and just as Tuscan cuisine evolved from rich family traditions, many of Toscana's recipes originated with the mothers and grandmothers of the Italian culinary staff. Presented on elegant, custom-designed Versace china, masterfully prepared dishes exemplify the essence of Tuscany and celebrate Italy’s culinary passion. Perhaps the evening begins with an appetizer of Octopus Carpaccio with Champagne Vinaigrette, or the Artichoke and Parmesan Cheese Timbale with Black Truffle Sauce. Classic dishes from other regions of Northern Italy are featured as well, such as the Minestrone alla Genovese, Lasagne al Forno alla Bolognese, and Osso Buco alla Milanese.

    Wheelchair Assistance

If a guest needs wheelchair assistance at embarkation and debarkation, the request must be communicated prior to departure so appropriate arrangements for assistance can be made. If a guest is requesting wheelchair assistance at the airport, they must contact the airline directly.

    Oxygen

Oceania Cruises does not provide oxygen for guests. If a guest requires oxygen, they will need to bring it on board with them. The guest may contact a supply company that will deliver it to the ship for them. Oceania will need to know how many containers, what size they are, and the type. Liquid oxygen is not allowed on board Oceania ships at any time. If the guest needs oxygen for their flights, they will need to arrange it directly with the airline.

    Delivery of Medical Equipment

Having medical equipment brought on board is handled on a case by case basis. Oceania Cruises must receive the full dimensions, description of the equipment, name of the delivery company, and all other pertinent information prior to the cruise.
