Optional Private Excursions

Avoid the crowds and hustle and bustle associated with a group activity. For a memorable trip ashore, we invite you to consider a private shore excursion. Enjoy the undivided attention of your own driver/guide and the flexibility of experiencing the aspects of the local culture that most interest you. Below are just some samples of the private shore excursions we can arrange for you. Let us personalize your experience!

Darwin: WWII History Tour - 4 hours
You will be met at your cruise vessel by your private guide and vehicle for a half day tour of Darwin.

Travel through the city past Parliament House to a viewing platform overlooking the harbour, where you will learn about the destruction of Darwin by the Japanese air attack on the city in 1942. See the Stokes Hill Wharf area before continuing to the World War II storage tunnels. The tunnels were built during WWII by the Civil Construction Corps. This unique tourist attraction located in the Darwin Wharf Precinct was reopened in 1992 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin. Located beneath the cliffs of the city, your private guide provides historical information relating to the concept of the tunnels. The WWII tunnels these days feature a photographic display of Darwin during WWII including photographs of the brave men and women who served in the protection of Australia.

Continue on to East Point Military Museum and Reserve. Visit the bunker where the army planned Top End defence strategy during World War II. The East Point Military Museum was Darwin's first museum. The museum includes artillery, videos, armoured vehicles and photographs. This military museum displays war memorabilia, gun aiming equipment, firearms and aviation, navy and army exhibits. There is also a video showing dramatic live footage of the Japanese bombing of Darwin. The surroundings are part of the East Point Reserve.

Upon conclusion of your touring, you will be transferred to the cruise terminal.

Tour duration: approximately 4 hours
Cost includes: touring in luxury vehicle, professional local guide, pick-up and return to the cruise ship, entry fees
Cost excludes: lunch
Darwin: City Sights and Surrounds - 8 hours
This morning you will be met at your cruise vessel by your private guide and vehicle for a full day tour of Darwin and surrounds.

Your day begins with a visit to Darwin’s attractive waterfront region and historic Stokes Hill Wharf. Your guide will explain the history of Darwin, including the air raid bombings during World War II and Cyclone Tracy, which devastated the city in 1974.

Heading out of town, your first stop is Fogg Dam; a vast, open wetland area that is home to large numbers of colourful birds at various times of the year.

Visit the Corroboree Road House for a brief stop and join a small group scenic cruise around the picturesque Corroboree Billabong, viewing a large variety of wetland birds and crocodiles in their natural environment. This area is part of the Mary River Wetlands system.

The return trip to Darwin takes you along the Marrakai Track, travelling past cattle stations and viewing the mighty cathedral and magnetic termite mounds, which tower over six metres in height.

On conclusion of the tour, you will be transferred to the cruise terminal.

Tour duration: approximately 8 hours
Cost includes: touring in luxury vehicle, professional local guide, pick-up and return to the cruise  ship, light lunch, entry fees
Cost excludes: beverages at lunch
Darwin: Litchfield National Park Discovery Tour - 8 hours

This morning you will be met at your cruise vessel by your private guide and vehicle for your day tour to the Litchfield National Park.

Please note; please bring shoes suitable for walking short distances on uneven terrain, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a swimming costume and towel.

Travel approximately two hours south from Darwin past abandoned WWII airstrips and the town of Batchelor for the approximately one hour journey through the Litchfield National Park. Ascend the rocky Tabletop Range where dry woodlands and forests dominate the huge sandstone plateau. Arrive at Litchfield National Park. This fascinating, uniquely beautiful area was originally the home of the Aboriginal Wagait people.

Travel through the park to the famous Termite Mounds. One of Litchfield's unique sights, this collection of hundreds of termite mounds standing over six feet high in a wide swathe of empty ground has the appearance of a graveyard. The mounds are like enormous magnetic compasses with their thin edges pointing north-south and broad backs east-west, minimizing their exposure to the sun. This ingenious design keeps the mounds cool for the termites inside.

Drive to Wangi Falls. The falls flow into a large, easily accessible swimming hole surrounded by lush monsoonal rainforest making them Litchfield National Park's most popular attraction.

On conclusion of the tour, you will be transferred to the cruise terminal to reboard your vessel.

Tour duration: approximately 8 hours
Cost includes: touring in luxury vehicle, professional local guide, pick-up and return to the cruise ship, lunch

Shipboard Policies
  • Internet Access
Silversea ships are equipped to offer wireless (Wi-Fi) Internet access. Guests can use their own laptop to surf the Internet and check emails at Wi-Fi locations throughout the ship, or from the comfort and privacy of their suite. Computers, email and Internet access are also available on board at the Internet Café. However, it is important to understand that telecommunication services while at sea are via satellite and significantly different than high-speed connections on land back home. The signal travels in a similar manner to radio waves but at much greater distances. Therefore, onboard Internet access is not guaranteed at all times. Satellite communications are also affected by weather and the ship's location. In particular, Internet service is extremely sporadic while in the Arctic. Guests aboard expedition cruises to/from Svalbard should be prepared to be out of communication for the duration of their time on board. (Please be assured that Silver Explorer always has emergency communication capabilities.)

    Internet Service Fees
The same rates apply, whether accessing the Internet via personal laptop or via the Internet Café computers. All charges are posted directly to guests' onboard account. No credit is given for unused Time Plan minutes. Rates shown are in US dollars and are subject to change.

    • Basic Rate: $0.50 per minute (pay as you go)
    • Time Plan 1: 100 minutes for $45 ($0.45 per minute)
    • Time Plan 2: 250 minutes for $85 ($0.34 per minute)
    • Time Plan 3: 1000 minutes for $250 ($0.25 per minute)

  • Medical Emergencies
Each Silversea ship is equipped with a Medical Centre, which is customarily staffed by a doctor and nurse on 24-hour call when at sea. When docked, supplementary emergency care may also be obtained through local medical facilities.

  • Pregnancy Policy
At the time of booking, expectant mothers are required to supply a medical certificate establishing their fitness for travel at the time they are due to travel. Silversea is unable to accommodate women who have entered their twenty-fourth (24th) week of pregnancy during their voyage, and will not be responsible or liable for any complication relative to any pregnancy during the entire duration of the cruise or thereafter. Additionally, airlines may have restrictions that may differ from Silversea’s. Please contact your travel professional or airline.

  • Smoking Policy
In consideration of evolving consumer trends, and to further promote a safe, comfortable and enjoyable environment for all Silversea guests, staff and crew, the smoking policy was updated on January 1, 2013.

    Smoking is NOT allowed in:

    • Guest suites and guest suite verandas
    • All Public Areas, Lounges and Bars

Smoking (including Cigars, Pipes and Cigarettes) is allowed in:

    • The Connoisseur's Corner.
    • In addition, tables and seating have been made exclusively available outside the Panorama Lounge, the Pool Bar, and specified areas of open decks.
    • Tables and seating have been made available outside La Terrazza for cigarette smoking exclusively.

  • Wheelchair Access & Special Needs
Guests who rely upon wheelchairs must bring their own. Please note that not all shore excursions are suitable for guests with impaired mobility.

All guests are required to report in writing to Silversea at the time their reservation is made:

    • Any physical or mental condition that may require medical or professional treatment or attention during the voyage
    • Any condition that may render the guest unfit for travel, or that may require special care or assistance
    • Any condition that may pose a risk or danger to the guest or anyone else onboard the ship
    • Any condition that may require oxygen for medical reasons
    • Any intention or need to use a wheelchair aboard ship.

By booking passage and by boarding the ship, the guest represents and warrants that they are physically and otherwise fit to travel, and that the guest will comply at all times with applicable rules and regulations of the ship and orders and instructions of the ship's officers and medical staff. Silversea reserves the right, without liability, to require a guest to disembark and/or to refuse to board and transport a guest who, in the judgment of Silversea or the ship's Master, is unfit to travel or may require care beyond that which Silversea is reasonably able to provide. Those guests requiring wheel-on and/or wheel-off access must contact Silversea prior to making a booking. Silversea reserves the right to deny boarding to any guest who failed to notify Silversea of such requirement at the time of booking.
