The Jerónimos Monastery, masterpiece of the Manueline style and a tribute to the king that welcomed and protected the Jews that fled from Spain and then expelled them in 1496. The Monument to the Discoveries where you will have the opportunity to see the faces of Jewish men that participated actively in the Portuguese Golden Age of the Discoveries.
 
The Monument to the Discoveries celebrates the Portuguese who took part in the Age of Discovery. It is located on the estuary of the Tagus river. The monument consists of a 52 metre-high slab of concrete, carved into the shape of the prow of a caravel with its sails unfurled.
 
Belém Tower is a fortified tower located in the Belém district of Lisbon. It was built in the early 16th century in the Portuguese late gothic style, the manueline, and is one of the symbols of the city.
 
The Commerce Square with the beautiful façade of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao Velha. The Church’s greatest highlight is its Manueline Portal representing Our Lady of Mercy, which was part of the ancient Misericórdia Church, featuring a tympanum with the images of the king D. Manuel the 1st, the Queen D. Leonor (sister of King Manuel and founder of the Order of Mercy) and Pope Leo X, the Rossio square and the gothic revival elevator de Santa Justa. The heart of the city is the Baixa or city centre; this area is being considered for UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
The Museu Nacional do Azulejo or National tile museum is renowned for not only for its Azulejo (tile) collection but also for its location. Azulejo is a cherished Portuguese tradition that has enjoyed uninterrupted production for five centuries. Azulejo is glazed, ceramic tilework that is usually blue. It is a major component of Portuguese architecture and is found throughout the country on ceilings, floors, walls of churches, palaces, and homes. This museum occupies the ancient Convent of Madre de Deus (Mother of God), built in 1509 by Queen D. Leonor, and adjoining buildings including Saint Antony’s Chapel and a church noted for its Baroque style.

The castle of Sao George is located on one of the seven hills of Lisbon, to the east of the Baixa. In the context of the Christian Reconquista the castle and the city of Lisbon were retaken from the Moors by King Alfonso Henriques with the help of Northern European crusaders taking part on the Second Crusade. The castle was dedicated to Saint George in the late 14^th century by King John I.
 
Lisbon's ancient cathedral was built by Portugal's first king on the site of an old mosque in 1150 for the city's first bishop, the English crusader Gilbert of Hastings. From outside (with two bell towers and a splendid rose window) it resembles a medieval fortress, while inside it appears predominantly Romanesque, with a Gothic choir and ambulatory.
 
Jewish people were the advisors of Kings and Queens, doctors and even some of the explorers, geographers and mathematicians. The tour will start with a general introduction to the Jewish presence of the city, followed by a nice walk in the city centre passing by the site of the 1506 Jewish Massacre near the Church of Sao Domingos and the most well preserved Alfama Jewish and medieval Quarter. Alfama is a village within a city still made up of narrow streets, tiny squares, churches, and whitewashed houses with tile panels and wrought-iron balconies adorned with pots of flowers, drying laundry, and caged birds. 
 
With the abolition of the Inquisition in 1821, families of Sephardic Jews decided to return to Portugal. Most of these Jews were merchants from Morocco and Gibraltar. These were people with a cultural level greatly above average. They could read, speak and write in liturgical Hebrew, Arabic, English and Hakitia, the Moroccan judeo-hispanic dialect.
 
We will continue our tour with a visit to the only Synagogue of Lisbon (Shaaré Tikvá), passing by the Commerce Square, the place where thousands of Jews were forced to be baptized in the 15th century.

Sintra is one of the most
delightful places to be found in Portugal. With its extensive range of green
bills with its crags - the Serra de Sintra - so picturesquely situated and offering
stupendous views of the coastline with its impressive beauty, Sintra is indeed
"a garden of the earthly paradise". The artistic heritage of the Old Town, described
by Byron as "the most pleasing in Europe", also include valuable archaeological
remains, particularly from the Roman period, ancient manor houses, churches
of personalised artistic value and characteristic villages.

 

The National Palace is consisting
of various bodies built during the course of successive epochs on the so-called
"Chão da Oliva", the Paço da Vila de Sintra is one of the most important examples
of regal architecture in Portugal and for that reason is classified as a National
Monument. This gradual multiplication of buildings, with different styles, is
largely responsible for the enigmatic enchantment of this ancient palace, dominated
by great twin chimneys atop the kitchen that constitute as authentic ex-libris
of Sintra.

 

Cascais was a small fishing
port throughout early history as it lies protected from nature's elements at
the mouth of the Rio Tejo. When in 1870 the King, Luís I, chose to convert the
17th Century building of the Citadela into his summer residence Cascais soon
became a very fashionable town and aristocratic palaces and mansions followed.
The Citadel or Fort of Cascais is a 16th century fortress built to protect the
Bay of Cascais. Today, Cascais now boasts smart new Marina with lovely yachts.

 

Just outside the town is
the famous Boca do Inferno in which the sea on rougher days hammers into the
rock and creates a booming noise and a spectacular spray thus creating its name
which in English means "mouth of hell".

 

Estoril town was really
created from the curious needs of the two World Wars. It became a prime location
for European royal exiles forced to leave their own countries. It has been the
residence of King Umberto II of Italy, Juan de Bourbon of Spain, Karl Hapsburg
of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and King Carol of Rumania. The many modest yet
architecturally interesting mansions still remain to indicate their royal owners.
At its height its visitors referred to Estoril as the "Portuguese Riviera".
A Casino with wide surrounding avenues and spacious gardens, a golf course,
all of which soon appeared and then flanked by large hotels and impressive private
homes.

The Romans gave the name of "Lacobriga" to the town of Lagos but its natural river port would indicate very much earlier occupation. The Moors then gave the town the name of "Zawaia" It was captured from the Moors in 1189 but it was not until 1249 that it was finally conquered by Dom Afonso III and integrated into the kingdom of Portugal with the name of "Lagus". This historic town has played an important part in the story of discovery of many parts of the world. It was from the harbour that Vasco da Gama sailed in 1499 on his historic and epic voyage of discovery. Lagos was the capital of the Algarve from 1578 until 1756 and there remain several ancient buildings to testify to its historic glory.

 

Lagos is now an important tourist town with many architectural signs of its ancient past, even a building dating originally back to around 1445 which is recorded as being Europe's first building used as a slave market. The walls of the town in the most part remain after sections were restored. Attached to the famous 17th Century "gold" church of Santo António there is a small museum of regional items, some of which are quite odd! The town's more recently constructed Marina presents a lovely picture and this harbour is practically the first sight a visitor has of Lagos. There are several interesting statues erected to the famous figures of the past that are associated with the history of this town.

 

We drive to Vila do Bispo a very small administrative town for the Sagres area, the later being the most south-west corner of Europe! This area is a must for every visitor to the Algarve as it presents a very impressive and dramatic sight of towering sheer cliffs being beaten by the weight of the vast Atlantic Ocean. It is from here that Prince Henry sat and planned the several epic voyages of discovery that enlarged the known world of that time.

 

Sagres is close to the most south western point of Europe known as Cape St. Vincent. The legend of the martyr Saint Vincent is that his relics were mysteriously transported by ravens from the Holy Land to the Cape and subsequently guarded by them. The small chapel of Nossa Senhora da Graça and reputably the giant pebble wind compass, Rosa dos Ventos. The present walls surrounding the area are the remains of a 17th Century fort. At the nearby Cape St Vincent is an impressive lighthouse that can normally be visited.

Silves was once the capital
of the whole district and was still referred to in the beginning of the 19th
Century as the "Kingdom of the Algarve". Evidence shows that it was already
a place of note in Roman times but it really became an important place during
its occupation in the early 11th Century by the Moors. Giving it the name of
Xelb, they constructed lavish palaces and created a cultural centre of learning
for the whole Iberian Peninsular. Although it was important as a town it still
fell under the mantle and control of Cordoba in Spain. It is recorded that in
1189 there were over 15.000 inhabitants when the Knights of Santiago sacked
the city with the assistance of the Anglo-Norman Crusaders. Two years later
it was retaken by the Caliph Ben Yussef. In 1242 that it was again under the
control of the Portuguese Kings.

 

The impressive remains of
the castle dates back to Moors and there is a impressive underground water reservoirs
that are still used by the city today. As a reminder of the Romans occupation
is the Ponte Romana, a fine strong bridge over the Rio Arade below the city
walls and having been rebuilt from the original in the 15th Century. The city's
earlier 13th Century Cathedral was built on the site of a Mosque and has suffered
considerable alteration over the centuries.

Portimao (Algarve): Full Day Excursion to Faro, Olhao and Tavira

Drive through the east coast of the Algarve to the village of Tavira a labyrinth of pretty streets. Then we continue to Olhao to visit the fishermen quarter and to Faro city with the Roman walls, the cathedral and the church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo.

Faro is the administrative centre for the whole of the Algarve region. The city has both Arab and Roman ruins but most of the present attractive older buildings were constructed after the disastrous earthquake of both 1755 and 1532. The Moors who occupied the town in the 8th Century originally gave the city it the name of Ossónoba and developed it into a trading port until 1249. They were then defeated by the forces of Dom Afonso III. During the 500 years of Moorish occupation there were some Jewish inhabitants in Faro who were kept busy printing copies of the Old Testament.
 
Particularly attractive is the old part of the city surrounded still by the Roman walls which date back to the 9th. Inside a spacious open square that was once the site of the Roman Forum is a 13th Century Cathedral that faces the 18th Century Episcopal palace. An interesting building is the neighbouring 16th Century Convent that is now turned into the home of the city’s archaeological museum. The "golden" church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is claimed to be the best example of gold-leaf woodwork in southern Portugal.
 
Next to the small boat basin bordering the Praça de Dom Francisco Gomes is a small Naval Museum composed of scale model boats and galleons showing the maritime history of the coast. Faro is also the home of the Ria Formosa lagoon, a nature reserve of over 17.000 hectares and a stopping place for hundreds of different birds during the spring and autumn migratory periods.
 
The Olhao fishermen’s district is a nice place to visit, where you can see the whitewashed houses, some of them with tiles and flat roofs. Here, narrow streets cover the district and its possible to see the Moorish influence. If the visitor climbs to the bell tower of Nossa Senhora do Rosario church, they can contemplate all the city.
The fishermen's quarter is located between the quay on the Ria Formosa and the earth of the city defined by the main church. The streets that border the Avenida da República, itself a symbol of the urban development that took place at the turn of the century, reflect a city of industrials and ship-owners who grew rich from the fish processing business and trade, displaying their wealth by decorating their homes with verandas, tiles, carved stonework and wrought iron.
 
Tavira has a really nice old city centre made up by a labyrinth of streets with beautiful pavements. The centre hides gardens and wooded squares, churches, and worth-to-visit mansions. Visit the Misericordia church built between 1541 and 1551 and considered the most important Renaissance building in Algarve. The city also has a small fishing port.

Inhabited for more than 2,000 years by different Mediterranean civilizations, Málaga is today a city which combines tradition and modernity. Stretching below the watchful eye of the Castle of Gibralfaro is a lively and bustling city crammed with beautiful corners, such as the Alameda Principal, the gardens of Puerta Oscura and Pedro Luis Alonso, the Park, and the beach promenade.
Historic Málaga offers countless spots and corners full of local colour. The Merced square, dominated by the Monument to Torrijos and where the house in which the famous painter Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born is situated. A tour of the historic quarter must take in the busy Pasaje de Chinitas, the old streets of the former jewish quarter and calle Larios, the old town's main thoroughfare.
Established in 1490, Santiago is Málaga's oldest church and it was built on the site of a former mosque. Only the central entrance in the Mudéjar style remains of the original façade. The square tower in the same style was conceived as a separate minaret and was attached to the church in the 16th century. From Calle Granada, a beautiful Almohad sebka (a grid of rhombuses) cloth can be seen in one of its sections. Pablo Ruiz Picasso, the brilliant painter who revolutionised 20th century art, was baptised here in 1881.
Pablo Picasso, the most important painter of the 20th century, was born in 1881 at number 15 Plaza de la Merced. Declared a Historic/Artistic Monument of National Interest in 1983, Casa Picasso began by occupying the first floor and now occupies the entire building. The property nestles in the architectural complex known as Casas de Campos (Rural Houses) where Don José Ruiz Blasco and Maria Picasso, Pablo Ruiz Picasso's parents, lived.  
Málaga's Roman Theatre is one of the remaining symbols of Roman Hispania in the city. In addition to the theatre itself, it has a modern interpretation centre where new technologies present the life and customs of the time. The Theatre has also been returned to its original use and different types of shows take place inside.
 
Buenavista Palace houses a permanent collection showing eight decades of work by Pablo Picasso, who was born in Málaga in 1881. The collection conveys the rigor and creativity of an artist who is essential to understand the history of Western art. Further, temporary exhibitions delve into the artistic context, while the program of activities proposes many ways to enjoy the arts. The collection features 233 works that cover 80 years of the painter's work, from 1892 to 1972. 
In the centre stands the Cathedral (16th-18th centuries), also known as “la Manquita” because of its unfinished right tower. This temple, beautifully executed in the Renaissance style, preserves an interesting series of chapels which contain fine examples of Andalusian images. In the old town, other prominent churches are Santiago (15th-18th centuries), with a beautiful Mudejar tower and Sagrado Corazón.

Malaga: Ronda Full Day Excursion

A drive through the rugged Serrania de Ronda will bring you to a broad open plateau surrounded on all sides by jagged mountains. Ronda stands on an enormous outcrop of rock. This town in the Málaga region sits on either side of the Tajo del Ronda, a narrow gorge more than 150 metres deep. Celts, Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs all inhabited these lands, which were reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs. The historic quarter, reminiscent of the Arab age and with a medieval layout is scattered to the south of the Guadalevín, while more modern Ronda, the part which sprang up after the 16th century, unfolds to the north of the course of this river.
The major religious work is Santa María la Mayor, where Arab and Christian features combine. On the site of an old Roman temple, the Arabs built the Main Mosque of Ronda in the 13th century. Preserved from this period are the mihrab arch, decorated with stucco, and the minaret, transformed into a belltower.
The House of the Moorish King, meanwhile, boasts Gothic-Mudejar decoration and some hanging gardens, declared to be an Artistic Garden.
The civil architecture of Ronda is reflected in its ancestral homes and aristocratic small palaces such as the Palaces of Mondragón and of the Marquis of Salvatierra. The Mondragón palace was for centuries the residence of Muslim and Christian kings, and today it houses the city's Archaeological Museum.
The San Juan Bosco House is a modernist palace built at the beginning of the 20th century. It is located at the Tajo's edge, at the heart of the historical city quarter of Ronda. It It has got a nice courtyard, decorated with arab style ceramics and a very complete collection of regional ceramics.It is also advisable to see its 19th century tapestries and its walnut furniture.
The gardens are very interesting, due to its placement, being one authentical balcony on to the Serrania.
Three bridges span the ravine measuring more than 100 metres in depth and lead to the other side of the city. The Arab bridge was built in the 14th century and gave access to the Old Outskirts. The so-called old bridge is comprised of a single arch measuring some 10 metres across. But most emblematic of all is the New Bridge, a colossal feat of engineering which joins the neighbourhoods of Mercadillo and Ciudad. And the bullring one of the oldest in Spain and most emblematic for the famous “goyescas” bullfight.

At the foot of Sierra Nevada,
between the Darro and Genil rivers, lies one of the most interesting cities
in eastern Andalusia. Because it was the last city reconquered by the Catholic
Monarchs in 1492, Granada has an unmistakable Arab flavour. Fountains, viewpoints
and Cármenes, the villas surrounded by gardens typical of the city, add to Granada's
unforgettable charm. Not in vain was one of its oldest districts, the Albaicín,
declared a World Heritage Site, together with the Alhambra and the Generalife.

 

The Alhambra's reddish hills
house the old Alcazaba and the Nazarite Royal Palaces. This artistic gem of
Arab Granada, built between the 13th and the 15th centuries, is composed of
many rooms linked by courtyards, gardens and fountains. Its delicate execution
is evident in such places as the courtyards of Arrayanes and Leones, and in
the Salón de los Embajadores or the Sala de las Dos Hermanas. The Generalife
gardens, the summer residence of the Nazarite Monarchs, is also located on this
hill, along with the Palace of Carlos V, a Renaissance-style building.

 

The Albaicín quarter, with
a deep Arab flavour, is located on another one of the city's hills and can be
seen from the Alhambra. Narrow and steep streets are filled with cármenes (traditional
villas with gardens), old mosques on top of which churches have been erected
(San Salvador, San Bartolomé and San José), and little squares like San Nicolás
and San Cristóbal. Both these spots enjoy great views over the Alhambra and
the peaks of Sierra Nevada.

Malaga: Cultural Half Day City Tour

The Castle of Gibralfaro (14th century), joined to the Citadel by a stretch of wall, gives the best views of the city, which opens out onto the sea with the port and the promenade of La Farola, one of the major leisure areas in the city. At the foot of Gibralfaro is the bullring (known as "La Malagueta") and the historic quarter of the city.
One of Malaga's architectural gems is the Atarazanas Market. The main entrance, an imposing horseshoe archway in off-white marble, is in fact the only remaining part of what was once a grand seven-arched shipyard (Ataranzas in arabic). From shipyard to market, Atarazanas underwent many transformations. Following the fall of the city to the Catholics in 1487, a convent was set up there, afterwards the building was turned into a huge military fort for storing weapons. Later, it became a hospital and even housed a medical school.
 
The Sagrado Corazón Church is located in the Plaza de San Ignacio de Loyola. It is a neo- gothic building constructed in 1920, according to the architectural plans of Fernando Guerrero Strachan, who was commissioned by the Jesuits. It has a basilica, divided into three naves. 
Historic Málaga offers countless spots and corners full of local colour. The façade of the City Hall, from the early 20th century, can be admired. A tour of the historic quarter must take in the old streets of the former jewish quarter, the Ben Gabirol Jewish Center in a House-Tower from the 17th century. The famous Hebrew poet and Jewish philosopher Solomon Ibn Gabirol was born in Malaga. The Juderia or Jewish Quarter was in the eastern part of the city (Postigo de San Agustín, Granada, Santiago, Alcazabilla and Zegrí streets and the Plaza de la Judería), the Synagogue was situated in part of the area where is located nowadays the Bodega el Pimpi Bar Restaurant, and the communal cemetery was on the slopes of Gibralfaro.
Located between the Alameda Principal and the Paseo de España, which runs parallel to Guadiaro Quay, the Malaga's Park extends from the Plaza de General Torrijos to Plaza de la Marina. It is made up of three walkways, each 800 metres long and ten metres wide; one is on the north side and the other two are to the south of the 25 metre-wide central thoroughfare for vehicles, a continuation of the Alameda Principal. It covers an area of 30,000 square metres if we count the rose garden surrounded by orange and cypress trees next to the City Council building and the gardens called Jardines de Puerta Oscura.

La Ribera quarter was in Roman times a place for country homes. In the 6^th century, the area was dominated by a Christian necropolis. The first monastery was raised here in the 11^th century. In the 13^th century it was a busy tradesmen’s district and Passeig del Born was Barcelona’ s main square from the 13^th to the 18^th centuries. Jousting tournaments, executions and other public entertainments took place in the Middle Ages.
The Santa María del Mar church is one of the best examples of 14th century Catalonian Gothic architecture. It is the work of the architect Berenguer de Montagut and was the templeof the shipowners and merchants in Gothic Barcelona. Seen from the outside, its appearance is solid and robust, dominated by straight lines. The inside consists of three naves, an ambulatory and is without a transept. The amazing height of the central nave with its majestic octagonal columns stands out.
The Palau de la Música Catalana was built between 1905 and 1908 by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and it is an architectural jewel of Catalan Art Nouveau, the only concert venue in this style to be listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (4th December 1997), which today represents an essential landmark in the cultural and social life of Catalonia.
 
The Santa Caterina market building was constructed on the former site of the Convent of Santa Caterina, from which it takes its name. The refurbishment of Barcelona’s first covered food market by the architectural practice of Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue was completed in 2005. The food market revealed a gleaming, undulating and brightly coloured roof designed to be seen from the air. The roof is attached to the building by a wooden structure, and a vast mosaic of coloured ceramic pieces, representing fruit and vegetables, boldly breaks with the traditional look of a market.
 
The Picasso Museum in Barcelona is a clear example of the ties Pablo Picasso had with the city of Barcelona. Here, he not only received sound academic training but also the artistic effervescence that lit the fire and opened the doors towards modernism.
Inaugurated in 1963, the Picasso Museum not only owns the most important and exhaustive collection of the works of art from Pablo Picasso's youth and period of training but also holds temporary exhibitions of other artists related to this artistic figurehead.

The moreneta of Montserrat. The adoration of this Virgin extended all over South America when the monk Bernat Boil accompanied Christopher Columbus to the New World.

 

It is said that an image of the Virgen de Montserrat appeared in a cave in the mountain. Situated 45 kilometres Northwest of Barcelona, the monastery was founded by Abbot Oliba in 1025, although there is evidence that in the year 888, there was a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God. In the 12th century the Romanesque church was built and in 1223, the first European School for child singers. Leon XIII declared the Virgin of Montserrat patron saint of Catalunya. In the year 1500, San Ignacio de Loyola arrived as a pilgrim. The library has over 300,000 books. We have a choir school. There is a museum with paintings by artists such as El Greco, Picasso and Dalí. There are even treasures from ancient Egypt, amongst which one of the most outstanding treasures is a mummy. Montserrat lost most of its heritage during the Napoleonic Wars. However, since the Monastery was restored in 1844, the Museum has formed a valuable collection of artistic works. Private donations, from the artists themselves, and the sensitivity of the monks have made this possible. The Museum is divided into different sections organised in an instructive way. There are 13th century documents that prove that a choir school already existed in Montserrat. It was a religious and musical institution, made up by choir boys.

The so-called "City of the Four Rivers", shows us a historic centre dominated by medieval buildings and reminders of Romans, Arabs and Jews. Inside the walled enclosure of "La Força Vella" you can find the culiminating works of its historical destiny. One of the rivers, the Onyar, divides the historic centre from the modern city.

Its Romanesque origin is shown in its fortress-like appearance and strategic location, although the most outstanding aspect is an immense Gothic nave, the widest in Medieval European architecture. Inside, it preserves one of the textile jewels of Catalan Romanesque, the Creation Tapestry.

 

Girona has other key pieces of religious architecture, like the Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants. The convent of Sant Doménech, built in Gothic style and a clear example of the importance of the religious orders in the colonisation and repopulation of Catalonia during the Middle Ages, stands amid gardens.

 

Also to this historical period belong important displays of Arab and Jewish art, the result of these cultures living side-by-side with Christianity for centuries. So, you will discover the multitude of small streets making up El Call, the Jewish quarter of Girona. Calle Força is the heart of this district, which had a synagogue and centres of cabbalistic study. The Call is currently one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in Spain.

 

In the 12th century, Jews moved to a lower part of the city. In 1160 they were already inhabiting the Call, the name given to Jewish quarters in Catalonia. It is a name coming from Latin callis (street), which would become carrer in Catalan and calle in Spanish. In medieval times, call meant a "group of narrow streets". These paved, narrow and labirynth streets constituted the urban space where most of the Jewish population in Girona settled in the 13th and 14th centuries. The community's main body was formed by tradesmen and craftsmen: tailors, shoemakers, weavers, barbers, furriers, blacksmiths, goldsmiths and silversmiths opened their workshops in the Call´s narrow streets. Others devoted their time to medicine and astrology, while those who had the means became money-lenders. In Girona there is The Bonastruc ça Porta Centre, located in the emblematic building that housed the last synagogue of Girona, is currently the home of the Museum of the History of the Jews and the Nahmanides Institute for Jewish studies.

 

Not far from here, a Capuchin convent houses the Arab Baths, where we should point out a pavilion built on eight fine columns and crowned by an octagonal cupola.

Figueres, county capital of Alt Empordà, extends over a river plain situated inland in the province of Girona. Known as the home of Salvador Dalí, this town with deep Catalan roots offers visitors the chance to go to the Dalí Theatre-Museum, dedicated to the genius of surrealist painting.

 

The Dalí Theatre-Museum is without doubt, however, one of the historical milestones that has left the greatest mark on the character of the town was the birth of Salvador Dalí. Situated in the old municipal theatre, has become one of the main cultural places to see in the city. Designed by the artist himself, it holds an important exhibition, which, through numerous works, allows you to take a trip through the career of the main considered a master of Surrealism. The site was extended with the Torre Galatea, where the artistic genius died.

An extensive grid, with large avenues and chamfered corners, joined the irregular layouts of old districts and outlying towns to the surrounding hills. The emerging Catalonian bourgeoisie chose this place to build its mansions and palaces, following the most daring principles of Modernism. 

The Sagrada Familia great expiatory temple: in 1883 the brilliant Gaudí agreed to direct this work, succeeding Francisco de Paula. The artist worked on it until his death. Work to complete this great church still continues today. The first architect to work on this project planned a Neogothic building. However, following his death, Gaudí took over, respecting the original layout of the work, but soon leaving the mark of his personality and way of doing things. He finished only the chapel of San José, the crypt and the door of El Nacimiento. The façades and the entire exterior show extensive decorative elements in bright colours. La Pasión entrance has a cryptogram there.

The Modernist Sant Pau Complex was built between 1905 and 1930 and designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner as a garden city for nursing the sick. After being used as a public hospital for a century, its newly refurbished pavilions shine again in all their splendour. A visit to this exceptional architectural ensemble is a unique experience. This is Europe’s foremost art-nouveau complex and an icon among Barcelona’s dazzling array of landmarks which embodies the city’s innovative spirit. It was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1997 and now its architectural and artistic values have been brought to a wider audience with the new use of its pavilions.

Casa Milà, better known as La Pedrera (Catalan for “The Quarry”), is a building designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. It is located in the Eixample district of Barcelona. It was built for Roger Segimon de Milà. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Works of Antoni Gaudí”. The building does not have any straight lines. Most people consider it magnificent and overwhelming; some say it is like waves of lava or a sand-dune. This building seems to break our understanding of conventional architecture. The most astonishing part is the roof with an almost lunar appearance and dreamlike landscape.
Casa Batlló building looks very remarkable, like everything Gaudi designed, only identifiable as Modernisme or Art Nouveau in the broadest sense. The ground floor, in particular, is rather astonishing with tracery, irregular oval windows and flowing sculpted stone work. It seems that the goal of the designer was to avoid straight lines completely. Much of the façade is decorated with a mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles (trencadís) that starts in shades of golden orange moving into greenish blues. The roof is arched and was likened to the back of a dragon or dinosaur.
The Museu de Modernisme Català is housed in a centrally located modernista building designed by the architect Enric Sagnier.n The top floor of the MMCat showcases the furniture and decorative arts and has a room dedicated to Antoni Gaudi. The ground floor displays paintings, sculptures and stained glass.

Barcelona: Gaudi’s Barcelona – 4 hours

An architectural delight awaits you today in Barcelona. Barcelona: Art and Architecture in Barcelona – 8 hours

An architectural delight awaits you today in Barcelona, one of the most exciting cities in Europe! Corfu Town & Achilleion Palace - 4.5 hours

Guests will be met by our English speaking guide to commence the tour. Upon completion of the tour, transfer will be provided back to the ship.

We drive to the old historical village of Gastouri and we arrive at the Achilleion Palace, the former residence of Empress Elizabeth of Austria and later that of Kaiser Wilhelm the 2nd.  Here we visit the museum with mementos of the two Royalties and enjoy the splendour of its landscaped gardens and the statues including the famous statue of the dying Achilles.

Continue through the coastal road of Perama to the beauty spot of Kanoni, where there will be time for drinks (upon consumption) and to photograph the famous views of Mouse Island.

From Kanoni, we continue to Corfu Town for a walking tour in the Historical centre of the fascinating old city where the following historical sights are to be seen:

• The residence of the High Commissioner, a splendid Edwardian building completed in 1824, once the sea  of the Knights of Saint Michael and Saint George up to 1864 and later the Palace of the King of Greece.
• The bronze statue of the British High Commissioner, Sir Frederick Adam.
• The Venetian quarters of Cambiello and Corfu's Historical Centre.
• The Town Hall, once a Venetian theatre, built in 1690.
• The Church of Saint Spyridon, Patron Saint of Corfu with the rare icons and where the Holy body of the Saint lays in a crypt.
• There will be free time for shopping before transfer back to the Port

Corfu is the ideal place to enjoy a diverse mix of different tastes. The cuisine is inextricably tied in with its history and this is what makes the food here so different from the rest of Greece. The cuisine is neither spicy nor bland, but rich in the flavours of the Mediterranean. Specialties consist of local ingredients found on the island; especially olives, lemons, vegetables, tomatoes and fish. Many dishes hark back to the days when cooks put all the ingredients in a single pot and left it to simmer all day.
 
Today’s excursion starts with the Old Town of Corfu, where you may enjoy a walking tour of this UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. After exploring Corfu historical center take a stroll through the local market.
 
Your tour continues with a scenic drive through the countryside to Triklino Vineyard, also known as Ambelonas Corfu, which is situated in Pelekas upon a hill with a panoramic view of central Corfu. Here local varieties of grapes are grown around a building of local architecture, in which traditional oil and wine production tools are displayed.
 
Upon arrival you will be welcomed with herbal soft drink. Get to know the history of the estate, the vineyard, the wild herbs and vegetables, the equipment and the processes for traditional olive and wine making and then spend some time learning about the principles ingredients and techniques of Mediterranean cuisine and the Corfiot culinary culture. You will then follow a step-by-step live presentation of the preparation of a full Corfiot meal – starter, salad, first course, main course, and desert. Participate in the cooking and sample the dishes at different stages of cooking. After the demonstration you will be able to enjoy lunch while relaxing in the ambient surroundings in the nature before returning to the port.

Exciting Jeep Safari in Corfu (Half Day) - 4 hours

Set off on an exciting safari for a day full of adventure and discover Corfu ‘off the beaten track! The safari begins with a scenic drive ascending the main coastal road heading towards the island’s north coast, passing en route the popular resorts of Alykes, Kontokali and Gouvia. Upon arrival at Gouvia, you will head through Ag. Vassilios and Ano Korakiana before you take a narrow meandering road passing through Sokraki, which is one of oldest villages on the island and perched on the mountain peak and cloaked with pine and olive trees. Then continue along a mountain ridge, which offers amazing panoramic views of the islands Mathraki and Othoni, and head towards the village of Troumbetta.
 
From Troumbetta follow a narrow country lane in a westerly direction passing by the villages of Alimatades, Vistonas and Makrades. Continue on to Castellino Restaurant which is located high up in the village of Lakones and is renowned for its spectacular panorama of the bay of Paleokastritsa. Owing to its position the cafe is also known as ‘God’s balcony’. Here you will have the opportunity to indulge in a typical Greek meze and a glass of wine or ouzo. From Lakones, descend to Paleokastritsa bay where a stop for swimming can be made. Upon completion of the tour, return to the port.

Piraeus: Cape Sounion - 5 hours

Meet your guide as you disembark your cruise ship in Piraeus and venture along the scenic coast to Cape Sounion where you visit the ancient ruined Temple of Poseidon. This temple is believed to date from the 5th century BC and was built to honour Poseidon, who ranked second only to Athena herself in terms of power. The Temple enjoys an impressive position, high on the cliffs, and has, over the centuries, been marked by many travellers’ carved signatures, including that of Lord Byron.
