Traveling Spoon

Fusina is a warm, open and welcoming Dutch host who loves to meet new people and learn about their culture. Fusina used to be the organizer of the Dutch cookbook competition and has authored many cookbooks about Dutch cuisine. A delightful storyteller, Fusina enjoys teaching travelers how to make and flip Dutch pancakes, a signature Dutch food that is relished throughout the country. Pannekoeken are a traditional Dutch treat - they are served sweet or savory and the Dutch have fond memories of this dish they grow up eating! Enjoy meeting a local in her beautiful apartment in the heart of Amsterdam over delightful Dutch pancakes. Meet your host Fusina at her home and weather permitting, walk by the canals to a local, organic grocery store (her favorite neighborhood shop) where you will discover authentic Dutch food and brands and shop for ingredients for your cooking class. Return to Fusina's cozy kitchen to learn to cook and flip pannekoeken, a very typical Dutch meal. You can create savory pancakes from ham and cheese as well as sweet pancakes with a variety of ingredients and toppings like fresh apples from the market. Your hands-on pancake cooking class, during which you will learn to make a savory and sweet Dutch pancake from scratch will last about an hour and a half. Enjoy learning about the techniques involved in creating this dish as well as other traditions of Dutch cuisine before you sit down at the table to share the meal you helped prepare with Fusina. Please note Fusina lives on a second floor and guests will climb a long and steep flight of stairs to get to her apartment. Also please note you are welcome to bring your own beer or wine to your culinary experience.

Amsterdam

Cosmopolitan Amsterdam is most famous for its narrow, gabled houses lining the canals. Interesting attractions include the medieval weighhouse, Royal Palace on Dam Square, and New Church. Its most glamorous industry is the diamond trade. Not too far from Amsterdam are the flower centers of Aalsmeer, the picturesque fishing villages of Volendam and Marken, cheese markets at Edam and Gouda, and historic Haarlem, the main center of the bulb-growing industry. Enjoy the city’s sights from a glass-topped sightseeing boat which passes characteristic gabled houses and negotiates picturesque arched bridges. Facing Dam Square, the Royal Palace was built in 1648 and is still officially the royal residence, although the royal family resides in The Hague. The marbled Citizens Hall with inlaid maps of the world is worth seeing. One of Amsterdam’s most visited sites is historic Anne Frank House. Rijksmuseum, the city’s most prestigious museum, houses the largest collection of Dutch paintings in the world. Van Gogh Museum houses a striking collection.
